Language Arts (Period 3) Assignments

Students are finishing up the typing of their spring novel paragraph on to a Google document.  Final draft is due tomorrow.

Students are writing their 7 paragraph drafts this week about the spring novel they read.  See attached outline.  Final draft is due Friday, May 12th.

Classwork

We reviewed the ten vocabulary words, their definitions, and part of speech (usage).  We shared our picture definitions.  We then took a quick practice test in our notebook.

 

Homework

Practice writing out your words.  Create flash cards for all 10 words and bring the flash cards to school in the morning.  You may use cut rectangles of paper to make flash cards.

We reviewed two new resources -- most common list of prefixes and suffixes (and their meanings) -- and practiced writing new words using prefixes and suffixes and roots.

Students were given their first Vocabulary/Spelling List #1 (attached) with 10 new words and definitions.  We will now have Vocabulary/Spelling tests each Friday where students will spell each word and write a short definition.  We worked through the first list today.  Students should now practice writing their words, make flash cards, review and memorize the definitions, and prepare for Friday's test.

If you lived in one of the 13 Colonies, what would your life be like?  Writing in Narrative form, write 2 five sentence paragraphs keeping your verb tense consistent within each paragraph and being mindful of spelling, punctuation, and sentence quality (mechanics).  Students wrote their rough draft in class and had a peer edit it for them.

Students will take their second round of STAR Testing in Reading Comp and Language Arts on Tuesday, January 24th.  Attendance is strongly encouraged so we may gather additional testing data for your child.

As the students show strong performance with the 5th grade list, I have asked each student to also prepare flashcards for the 50 sixth grade words we passed out to class today.

Students are to write their 50 Spelling Bee words onto flash cards so they may practice spelling the words at home and in class.  The index cards should be held with a thick rubber band.  Please bring to class by Monday, January 23rd.

Please review the contents and writing samples found in your student's green writing portfolio.  You should begin to see some nice development in your child's writing over the course of the last two months.  Please return the portfolios to class on Wednesday.  Drawings may stay at home.  Writing samples should stay in the portfolio and return to school.
