We began Week 21 by reviewing the intolerable acts and taxes from King George III that led to the colonies seeking independence from England.  We then read the front page and began taking notes in our notebooks.

Week 10 Early English Colonies

Classwork
Today we introduced Week 10 of our USA Weekly series which focuses on Early English Colonies, starting with the Lost Colony of Roanoke, North Carolina.  Questions we explored: If I was 18 years old and graduated from high school and unsure about college, would I volunteer to go on an early expedition to the New World (and my parents supported it, of course)?  What happened to the Roanoke Colony?  What was the relationship like between early settlers and colonists and the American Indians?  Which countries (kingdoms) were competing for the New World?  How did the early slave trade impact Europe and the New World?

Week 9 Assessment Old Meets New World (The Columbian Exchange)

Students worked on their iPads finishing all the articles and activities for Week 9 as they prepare for their Assessment tomorrow.  We will have a review in class before the test, and students may continue to review at home by accessing their USA Weekly account.  All the articles and activities should be completed by tomorrow, either online or by completing the entire back page.  Here is the link for the USA Weekly (https://online.studiesweekly.com/login).

Week 9 iPad activities and Coin Collecting (Substitute assignment)

Students may continue highlighting the articles in their Week 9 newspaper.  Once they have read all of the articles and highlighted the main ideas, students may then retrieve their iPad and complete the article activities and collect coins.  They may complete the crossword on their back page of the newspaper, and they can work on the Think and Review responses on their iPad.  Assessment for Week 9 will be on Thursday.

Classwork
We finished up our notes for Week 8 learning about English and French explorers and their efforts to rid North America of the Spanish settlements.  We mapped out the routes of 5 explorers and taught ourselves how to find the north star (Polaris), and use other navigation tools.

Students are completing all the back page activities except for the Compass activity.  The Let's Write and Think and Review are all due tomorrow.

Week 8 Exploration Part II

Classwork
Individually, we read articles and highlighted main ideas for Week 8 starting with the front page and then the inside articles.  Students then wrote introductory notes in their Social Studies notebook, and we ended the period working on our iPads to check our understanding of the articles and collect coins!

Classwork
Students either completed typing their explorer facts into a Google Doc, and/or they began completing their Main Events page with their research facts.

We spent time in class working on our portrait page, biographical information page, the expedition route and sponsor flag, and types of vessels and crews for our explorer projects.  Students also completed their research of 8-10 facts and began to complete their Google Doc with the facts so they can practice word processing and sentence corrections.

Finish all research.  Work on various project pages.  Begin a Google Doc and type your facts out into 8-10 sentences.  Make corrections.  Prepare to copy your facts on to the Main Events page tomorrow.
