Use this area to turn in extra credit for three of your Language Arts classes. Here are your options. Feel free to do one, two, or none of them. They MUST be in by Friday evening. Each one can boost your OVERALL grade in each class by 3% but must follow the short guidelines below
ELA: Write a 5 paragraph essay including evidence based on this prompt:
In what ways is Stargirl a unique person? In what ways does she show conformity? Do you think the character of Stargirl would fit in in a regular high school today? Why or why not?
Spelling: Create illustrations for 25 words (any 25) from any Spelling vocab lists from this year. These must be by hand
READING LITERATURE NOTE: Create a short video, animation, or comic book/graphic novel that has your own interpretation of Esperanza Rising. You must include major plot points. If making a video it must be between 2-5 minutes.

Read through each slide carefully. There are two activities that you must complete, but please follow directions. There are two review lessons in this slideshow as well. We've gone over types of conflict as well as a plot diagram, but these are reminders for you. Fill in everything as completely as possible for full credit. If you have questions, please ask them during class and/or contact me. Some of you seem to be forgetting to simply press on the box with the arrow to open this up in Slides. Please make sure to edit in slides and do not turn this back in as a PDF. If you are having issues doing that, let me help you during class.
Due:
In the space provided on the document attached, please copy and paste, or write your prepared speech for your section(s) of your debate. There is an additional space down below if you have a second speaking position. Please make sure to use correct citations as you will be graded for it. Remember to time yourself when practicing this so you utilize as close to the required debate time as possible.
If you are handwriting this, make sure you identify your speaking position(s) and debate topic.
If you have questions about this or would like to see an example, wait for our class.

Using this planning sheet, come up with 5 arguments that you and your side can make for your team. Next, think of an argument that the other side can make to refute your statement or claim. Then, think of a fact or statement that you can use to fight that.
For example:
Main argument: Students should wear uniforms to school because it unifies everyone and makes them equal.
The other team: Students will lose their individuality by dressing the same.
Response: No matter what they wear, students will always be unique individuals whose personalities help them to express themselves.

Generally, you should be reading 3-4 chapter per day (Some chapter are VERY short). Questions for the week will be due by end of day next Tuesday to be talked about on Wednesday. If you want to get them done earlier, you may. Some of you are faster readers than others and some of you have already begun reading this book over the weekend, so you'll be reading independently, answering chapter questions as you go. We will not have an end of book major project, but there will be one last assignment for it next week as well as the second batch of questions to finish at your pace. I will be posting the questions for the week today and they are due by Tuesday evening. If you have questions about this, save them for class. Be prepared to talk about the rest of the book on Wednesday.
Due:
After working in your groups, find at least 5 sources about your topic and collect those sources in a document. Create an annotation so that you document what that source is about and why it is important. Link your document here.

Due:
We will go over the proper way to cite information and what an annotated bibliography is. After that, please fill out the annotated bibliography assignment that is titled PRACTICE after our class time. Utilize Easybib.com as well as any notes within the assignment or those you took in class to complete it correctly.
Due:
Take a HIGH QUALITY photo of your One Pager and submit it here. Please make double/triple sure that you have followed all directions on the rubric as this is a large chunk of your Reading/Literature grade and if you missed things, it will get deducted from your total. I've linked the rubric and original handout below. If you try to submit your One Pager and you did not get brainstorm approval from me, I will not be grading it. I can't wait to see how creative these turned out!
In-person kids: Please also bring the physical project to school with you on Friday. I will be hanging these up in our classroom
Zoomers-I will be printing yours out for you and hanging them up

Please read over the One Pager PDF document before class today. These are the instructions for your Esperanza Rising final project. I will THOROUGHLY go over the instructions as well as give you examples of what this project can look like when done. The brainstorm document is due by end of day next Monday (yes I know we don't have ELA class that day). The final one pager will be due next Friday and the link posted by next Wednesday after all are approved. You will use this brainstorm for me to approve your project and make sure that you are on track for success. Click the Google Slides (make sure it opens in slides), and click in the areas for the textboxes to start typing. Draw a line or circle using the line or circle tool on the first page to show what connect four line you are doing.
IMPORTANT: If you have questions about this before our class today, write them down so you don't forget. Do not email me or comment here about them. Wait for class.

If you would like to make corrections from your test last week, please use this area to do so. As we talked about in class, you can get half a point per question/vocab word done incorrectly from last week now correctly done.
Using a Google Doc, please write the word, it's definition, it's part of speech, and an ORIGINAL sentence in which the word is used correctly. If you can do this, you will get your points. If the sentence is plagiarized, the whole thing will get a zero and parents will be contacted. Remember our Zero Tolerance Policy about Plagiarism/Academic Dishonesty.

Using your book as evidence and any annotations and/or notes you've taken for ANY assignments on this novel, choose one of the three prompts to answer in a well-written 5 paragraph essay.
As we are working through learning about essay structure, it would be good to use your notes from those lessons to help you. This essay must be original (meaning not plagiarized from any source including classmates).
You MUST include evidence from the novel to back up your claims in each body paragraph. ONLY use the Google Doc that is attached here to write your essay.

Use this to follow along with our notes in class. Finish the rest in or at the end of class and turn in by the end of the day. Use your notes to help you.
Due:
After finding similarities and differences between two characters of your choosing, use the ACE paragraph organizer on the second slide to write a detailed paragraph in chunks.
Due:
Choose one prompt from the given ones. Delete the other two. Write a response in ACE paragraph format below the prompt. See the attached rubric on how you will be graded. DO NOT open this quiz up in a PDF editor. Open this up in Google Docs directly and type directly into the document. Don't forget to press turn in when done. (No need to attach since it's already here)
Due:
After learning about the types of conflict as well as cause and effect and problems, complete the three worksheets using your knowledge of Freak the Mighty.
Due:
We will be doing the first two slides together in class for this assignment. The next two are your responsibility.
Due:
The first two worksheets are to be used together in class for classwork. The second two worksheets are for homework but can be started together in class for classwork. Using information about proper citation, talk about a setting from Freak the Mighty. Use the worksheet/graphic organizer to do this.
Due:
Slides 1-5: Choose 5 different Spelling/Vocab words that you think are probably your most challenging. Use the boxes appropriately to identify the word, it's definition, create an illustration, give an ORIGINAL example sentence, and find the etymology (origin) of that word. One word per each of those slides. For the illustration you may draw separately, take a picture, and add it to that box, use Google Drawings, or anything that you'd like but make sure it gets added to the slide.
Slides 6-8: Follow the directions on the given worksheets to complete your work. Add textboxes where necessary or edit as a PDF and then submit.
Your whole list of spelling words are available in Quizlet.

Use this area to do your Literature Circle work for Chapters 9-12 of Freak the Mighty. Work together as a group, but only complete the assignment that you are scheduled for for this session. DELETE all other slides. If you are the artist, you may delete the whole slideshow and attach your image separately. This is classwork, so it should be done by the end of the period. If you absolutely need more time, please take only until the end of the day.
Due:
On the first slide, after listening to the song together as a class, work together to highlight, underline, or change the color of the font to match the below parts of speech.
On the second slide, in your own words, define what each part of speech does or how it works. Use the lyrics to the song to help you. Additionally, give 5 examples for each. Then, add one illustration for each part of speech. It may be hand drawn or found from the internet.

Use this space to turn in your final draft of your Neighborhood Narrative. Your narrative has already been written, so all you'll need to do is apply the edits from your peer critique time to your stories. You will have calm writing time in class to work on this and it is due by the end of the day. Attach your document here. Take a look at the rubric.

Due:
Use this handout to complete the pre-reading assignment. We will work on this together as a class, but complete and turn in when done by the end of the period.
Due:
Use this document to begin writing your neighborhood narrative. We will then edit this in small groups next week.
Due:
Use this document to write down the info between you and your peer critiquing partners. Take the time to read through your stories with each other and add commentary on what they may need help with, what you liked about it, and the info that your partner wants for you.
Due:
After going over the seven key figurative language elements, identify any elements that you see in the given song lyrics. EXPLAIN that connection and why it is used.
Due:
After reading through this article together as a class, we will be completing this Close Reading worksheet together and talking about the three levels of reading. Please finish and turn in by Wednesday morning before class. We should be able to finish it together, but if you need more time, please take that. Remember to write using complete sentences.
Due:
Attach your neighborhood drawing with the 3 annotations here. Please make sure I can read the 1 sentence each annotations, thank you. See my example for what it can look like
Due:
I know that I documented this via our Google form yesterday, but I'd like to use this area to return your grade to you for your Summer Reading Project. I have uploaded a rubric here. All I ask that you do is in the private comment area of the "assignment" (NOT on the public posting), tell me again where/how you turned in your book report and press MARK AS DONE so that I can give and return a grade to you.
Due:
Follow the directions in the Google Slides presentation to edit after we've gone over how to do this in class. Come back here and press turn in. For this assignment, because I've made each of you a copy, there is no need to attach anything because it's automatically done for you.
Due:
We will be using this in class today to do timed stations in breakout groups. At each station's timer, switch to the next "station" (slide). I will be rotating between each station. At the end of the period, if you need more time, please complete after class and mark as done back her.
