Oratorical Fair Slide Presentations

Classwork
This morning we were in the auditorium practicing our President and First Lady presentations.  Many of the students are still memorizing their slides and the content written on each.  However, the students did quite well overall (but we need more practice at home).
 
Homework
Please be sure to practice with your child so they are able remember their slides and are comfortable presenting on Friday at 10:30 am in the auditorium.  I recommend filming your child as they practice their slides and then give them constructive feedback for improvement.

Week 24 Impact on Families

Classwork
We began reading the articles and highlighting main ideas.  Students may begin to work on the back page exercises and crossword.  We will also watch videos, answer questions at the end of each article, and collect virtual coins.

Practice presenting Oratorical Slides/Week 24 Assessment

Classwork
We reviewed and took notes on Week 24 Impact on Families.  Students were then given time in class to work on polishing up their Presidents and First Ladies slides.

Practice presenting your slides to your family (and try and film yourself so you may critique your performance).  Tomorrow, we will practice in the auditorium for the first time.  All students will do a run through tomorrow.  Week 24 Assessment is tomorrow on their iPads.

Classwork
Students were given time to work on their Oratorical Fair slides for their presentation.  The Oratorical Fair is Friday, May 26th at 10:30 am in the auditorium and all parents and friends are welcome.  Pizza party for exceeding Walk-a-thon goals follows the fair!

Finish up slides and edit each one to ensure there are minimal to no mistakes, and that you are meeting the grading rubric expectations (attached).  Begin practicing your presentation and memorizing your facts.

Week 23 Turning Points / Presidents and First Ladies Research

Classwork
Students will read articles and watch videos (and collect coins) for this week's USA Weekly newspaper, Turning Points.  Students will also conduct research on their Presidents and First Ladies in preparation for the Oratorical Fair and their final research essay.

Complete the back page activities, the crossword and the Map the Concept (not the Think and Review and the Let's Write exercises, we will complete those together on Wednesday).  Assessment is on Friday, so study hard because we are shooting for a 90% class average!!!

We took Cornell notes today about the signing of the Declaration of Independence and learned about key Founding Fathers' roles in the writing and signing of this freedom document.

Women's History Month Presentations

Classwork
Students were given time to complete their research and work on formatting their Google slide presentation, which is to be written in their own words.  Each of the five slides should have an image and a compound sentence combining at least two facts per slide.

Finish all slides (title, and five fact slides) and prepare your oral presentation ("tell your story").  Presentations begin on Friday and finish Monday.

On a Google Doc, finish the Fact Sheet of your Legend and include 5 compound sentences to explain interesting facts you learned.  Check spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.  Share the doc with me when completed.  Include the name of the Legend in the title of your document.

Explorer Project - Page 5 and 6

Students are finishing up their Explorer projects and completing Page 5 (Map of Main Expedition) and Page 6 (Bibliography).  These last two pages are due Monday, November 11.

Students have been working in class on the project and tonight students are to finish completing page 3 and page 4 of their Explorer project.  Objectives are using the research they have collected, forming complete sentences, using conjunctions to combine short sentences into compound sentences, punctuation and capitalization, and spelling.

Students are working on a week long Explorer's project which we started last week in class with page 1 and page 2 (My Explorer Report page with portrait of explorer and the Biographical Overview side).  This week we are finishing pages 3 and 4 in class (see attachment for entire project and all pages).  Students will continue researching and reading about their explorer in class and at home and work on drafting the Main Events of Exploration section and the Transportation and Crew section.  These will be due on Monday, November 14th.

Students will read in class and at home the front and inside sections of the Week 7 newspaper.  As they read, students will highlight the articles and take notes in their social studies notebook using the Cornell note-taking method to list main ideas, names, dates, events and vocabulary.  When finished with the reading and note-taking, students may complete the back side of the newspaper (except for the Think and Review and Let's Write sections).
