Week 25 Contributions and Outcomes (independent work/assessment)

Classwork/Homework
This week students will work independently to complete the reading, highlighting, and back page activities of Week 25 for Social Studies.  We will review the weekly together on Wednesday and take class notes to be sure students have read and understand the articles, main ideas, and vocabulary.  They have the option to take the assessment on Thursday or Friday (and retakes are allowed).  Our goal is to try and complete at least one more week of the curriculum, after this week.

President/First Lady Reports (final report due tomorrow)

We are completing all pages 1-6 of our President and First Lady reports tonight, most students are just about finished and are encouraged to complete the project at home tonight to be turned in first thing in the morning.  Tomorrow, we will transfer the most important facts about our President and First Lady from our reports to presentation slides we will project on the screen for the Oratorical Fair on May 28th.  Report template is attached for printing at home (and students are given hard copies in class).

We reviewed Week 24 today and graded the back page.  We then worked with our Podmates to share the main ideas of the different articles.

President and First Lady Research (Oratorical Fair project)

Classwork/Homework
We are beginning phase one of our Oratorical Fair (President and First Lady research project) preparation.  Today we received an information card on our President, and we were able to use our iPads to gather evidence/research in the following key areas:
- Early life and education
- Life before presidency
- Key events during time in office
- Post- presidency life
- 5 interesting facts
 
We are gathering this research in our notebooks by going to the following websites at home and in class: biography.com, history.com, whitehousehistory.org, and britannica.com.

Week 23 Turning Points Assessment

Classwork
We took notes today on Week 23 focusing on pre-Revolutionary events and the early major battles of the war.

We are studying and preparing for the Week 23 Assessment, which we did not take before Easter break.  Some of us will take it tomorrow, and the rest of us will take it Wednesday (if we are not ready).

Students were given class time to read the front page and some of the inside articles of Week 22 while taking notes in their notebook.  In particular, we are comparing and contrasting George Washington and John Adams in our notes.  Week 22 Assessment is Thursday.

Explorer Project - Main Events page (paragraph draft)

Classwork
Today in class we worked on writing a rough draft paragraph using the research facts we found online about our Explorers. Students are practicing how to take a fact and create a compound sentences using their own words.  We also learned how to use editing/correction symbols today and we practice peer editing.  This will become common practice for us in class -- writing drafts and peer editing.
 
Homework
Students are rewriting their first drafts tonight using today's peer edits and suggestions.  Their rewrite is due in the morning; I will edit their next draft before we write our final drafts on the project paper sheet (or type at home).

Explorer Project -- Biographical page / Week 7 Assessment Friday

Classwork
Today we spent time reading and listening to the articles in Week 7 of our USA Weekly which covers Early Explorers from the 13th and 14th centuries.  Tomorrow we will take notes and discuss the various explorers and expeditions in more detail.  Our test on Week 7 will be Friday.

We collected the Portrait page of the project (page 1) for safe keeping, and tonight students are finishing the second page, the biographical information and the flag of sponsorship for their expeditions.  Students are neatly writing the biographical information at the top, and then drawing a flag of the sponsorship country below.  Due in the morning.  All the project pages are attached.
