Wonders Anthology and Your Turn Workbook

In their Wonders Anthology Book students started reading two stories, “The Friend Who Changed My Life” on pages 450-462 and “Choose Your Strategy: A Guide to Getting Along” on pages 464-467.  While reading the first story, students completed pages 261-262 in their Your Turn Workbook.  For homework students are to finish both stories and complete pages 263-270 in their Your Turn Workbook.

Finish reading spring novel and complete Reading Journal

Homework
Students are finishing their spring novel and completing their Reading Journal (attached) by Wednesday, May 10th.  This is the final day to complete both.  We start writing our novel reflection paragraphs next week.  This paragraph will have seven sentences (total), including a thesis statement, and one parenthetical citation from the novel they read.  The thesis will center on setting, character, conflict, or theme (one element).  Students know our writing process, we will start with handwritten rough drafts, then peer editing and teacher edits, rewrites, and a final typed draft.  This reflection paragraph is a precursor to the research essay we will write to finish the school year ( on First Ladies/Presidents).  Check out our Express Yourself bulletin board with our most recent essays on Where the Red Fern Grows (see attached photos), and our Poetry bulletin board with our recent spring poems.

Homework
To help us prepare for the upcoming Oratorical Fair in late May, we will memorize and recite the poems they just completed.  Students will stand in the front of class and recite their poem and then offer any explanation of themes or images they wanted to convey through their writing.  Recitations will begin on Tuesday, April 25th ending on the 26th using a random order selection.

We read three poems today -- Words Free as Confetti, Dreams, and A Story of How a Wall Stands -- and took notes on Free verse poems vs. rhyming poems, repetition, alliteration, and imagery.

In the Wonders Anthology Book, have students read Camping with the President on pages 46-61.  In their Reading notebook, they are to write each vocabulary word highlighted in yellow in the story and define the word in their notebook.  Also, as they read they are to briefly summarize the story in short sentence format.  One to two sentences per page of reading.  All of this in their notebook.
